Founded in 1962, KBW is a global, full-service investment bank specializing in the financial services sector. While our focus expanded over the years to include the full scope of the global financial services sector, our origins are deeply rooted in the U.S. banking industry. Since our founding, we developed and maintained an internal bank index, the Keefe Bank Index, to measure bank-stock price performance. We also created the KBW Bank Index (BKX) and KBW Regional Banking (KRX) as indices tracking both the large and regional bank universes.

Our firm was directly affected by the tragedies of September 11, 2001, as our headquarters in the World Trade Center were destroyed, and 67 employees, nearly half of our New York staff, perished that day. Nonetheless, we have been able to maintain our commitment to the business due to the depth of experience and longevity of our knowledgeable employee base.
The charts in the Timeline represent the index values for the Keefe Bank Index in ten-year increments from 1962 to 2012.
